Incoming - Polish Historical Cities Close Encounters - Experiencing Gdańsk / 4 days

Gdańsk used to be one of the most important trading centres of Europe. Its privileged location on the coast of Baltic Sea and near the estuary of the Vistula facilitated the efficient transportation system as well as contacts with neighbouring countries. Very soon in the 14th century the city joined the Hanseatic League and grew in wealth and power. In the 20th century Gdańsk was the victim of turning points in history. This was the first Polish piece of land to be attacked violently during the first days of the Second World War. Sixty years later in the birthplace of “Solidarity” thanks to Lech Wałęsa’s dedication and nation’s hope for changes the collapse of communism became real.

Day 1

Transfer to the hotel in Gdańsk. Meeting with the Polish tour leader at the hotel and description of the tour itinerary. On request we suggest organising a short lecture on the period of Poland’s Nazi occupation during WWII. It can be combined with a film showing the destruction of Gdańsk and other Polish cities during that time. Optionally you can have a presentation concerning the subject of strikes, Solidarity and the collapse of communism. Welcome dinner afterwards.

Day 2

Guided sightseeing of the city centre to see the historical backbone of Gdańsk – the “Main Town” with former seats of the most distinguished burghers and houses of public use. The sightseeing begins at the Upland Gate – the former main entrance to the city. We will pass by the remains of gothic defensive walls with Prison and Torture Towers. The Long Market is surrounded by richly decorated mansions – like the famous Uphagen’s Mansion. Close by there is the famous 15th century crane. The late gothic Main Town Hall is a characteristic landmark. It is surmounted with a life-size gilded figure of king Sigismund Augustus and houses richly decorated chambers. Beyond the Main Town Hall there is the Artus Court – the 15th century building used for Hanseatic League meetings and since the 17th century as a stock exchange. Right in front you can admire the Neptune Fountain – the official image of the city and its  connection with the sea. Just behind there is St. Mary’s Basilica – the gothic symbol of city’s wealth and power. On the way back we will walk along Mariacka Street with perfectly reconstructed terraced houses. Lunch with traditional maritime cuisine. Shopping break to buy the famous amber jewellery. Later that day a visit to the Cistercian Monastery in Oliwa to attend the pipe organ concert. The gothic cathedral is famous for this 18th century instrument with 7878 pipes of tin and wood.

Day 3

Further sightseeing of the city. We will walk to St. Bridget’s church – the spiritual hub of “Solidarity”. Next – the Shipyard Workers Solidarity Monument – commemorating the event that led to the collapse of communism in Central Europe. A visit to the National Museum exhibiting paintings, portraits of noble burghers, kings. Here you will find Flemish and Dutch pictures of Brueghel, van der Poel, Heeremans and more. You can also see furniture of the Netherland style, silver and copper utensils. An afternoon trip across the bay of Gdańsk to see the most picturesque landmarks. We will stop at Westerplatte – the place where WWII started, then Sopot, Gdynia and the Hel Peninsula.

Day 4

Morning transfer to the airport or railway station.
